What "black exterior" actually means on a sauna
The finish decides the maintenance, so the guide sorts the field by construction before it ranks anything.
Black aluminum exterior
The Luminar is the only sauna in this guide with a metal shell. Sun Home describes it as matte black aerospace-grade aluminum with a stainless steel roof and marine-grade matte black hardware, and its product pages say the exterior needs no staining, sealing or wood treatment. Sun Home also states the Luminar's exterior is protected by a design patent, which the patent record supports (see the origin section). What a metal shell does not do is change the interior: inside, the Luminar is Canadian red cedar.
Painted or stained wood cabins (indoor)
The Eclipse, the Equinox and the Onyxeek are wood cabins with a black exterior finish and a full-glass front. Indoors, a painted finish is a low-maintenance choice, since the cabin sees no sun or rain; the interior wood is what you touch and smell, and it differs by model (hemlock or cedar on the Eclipse, kiln-dried eucalyptus on the Equinox, hemlock on the Onyxeek). Sun Home says the Eclipse and Equinox live indoors in a climate-controlled room; Burneek's Onyxeek pages describe an indoor cabin as well.
Coated or stained wood barrels (outdoor, recoat on a schedule)
A black barrel is a wood barrel with a dark stain or waterproof coating, and outdoors that coating is a maintenance item. Almost Heaven frames its Onyx finish as one of two finishes on its cedar barrels, and its barrel FAQ recommends a pad, a rain jacket and periodic care. Burneek's Basalt barrel, discussed in the considered table, carries a black waterproof coating that Burneek says must be recoated every year. Black on a barrel is a look you keep up, not a look you buy once.

The Luminar 5 wins this guide for a reason a photo shows and a spec sheet confirms. The Luminar differs from the wood-bodied alternatives because its exterior shell is aluminum. Sun Home describes the exterior as matte black and says it requires no staining, sealing or wood treatment. This is the practical difference between an aluminum shell and every black wood cabin in the category. Inside, the Luminar is lined in Canadian red cedar, so it is also the answer for buyers searching for a black sauna with a cedar interior.
It is a full-spectrum infrared cabin with 10 full-spectrum and 5 far-infrared heaters on the 5-person, and 6 full-spectrum and 3 far-infrared on the 2-person, with a published maximum of 170°F. Garage Gym Reviews' hands-on review of the 5-person unit it tested recorded about 160°F after about ten minutes and said the cabin fell short of the published 170°F; that measured shortfall is the only independent temperature reading located for the Luminar and it is printed here because the guide prints what it finds. Fortune named the Luminar 5 its best outdoor sauna overall at 4.5 out of 5 in its 2026 outdoor sauna guide. Sun Home's app adds remote preheat and scheduling, red light towers are an optional $1,699 add-on, and the cabin carries Sun Home's RoHS compliance and Intertek documentation (the Luminar is not ETL Listed like Sun Home's indoor cabins). Sun Home's published Vitatech EMF summary and VERT cabin-air VOC sample apply at the platform and brand level rather than to a named Luminar unit, and both are linked from its safety testing page.

Trade-offs. Price, and the delivery. The Luminar arrives crated on a pallet at the curb and does not ship assembled: Sun Home's assembly page calls for two to four people and about three to four hours, with a contractor recommended, and white-glove delivery is a paid upgrade. The 5-person weighs 1,270 lb and needs a dedicated 240V, 30A circuit with a NEMA L6-30 receptacle; the 2-person is 970 lb on a 240V, 20A NEMA L6-20. The warranty is limited lifetime, defined as up to 7 years on cabinetry and heaters, 3 years on controls and 3 years on the exterior cabin for orders since March 2, 2026, with labor and shipping in the first 90 days; Sun Home voids it if the sauna is installed within 5 feet of a cold plunge, shower or hot tub, which matters for anyone planning a contrast setup.

Sun Home's site says the Eclipse introduced its black-exterior, full-glass-door indoor format, and the current cabin pairs that look with two front-facing red light towers at 660 nm and 850 nm, 900 W per tower, with Sun Home publishing 180 to 250 mW/cm² at six inches (219 average). Heat comes from two adjustable full-spectrum heaters behind the backrests plus far-infrared panels on three walls, a heated floor panel and a calf heater, to a published 165°F. The cabin has app control over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with remote preheat, Bluetooth audio and chromotherapy, and Magne-Seal panels that assemble without screws.
Sun Home's Eclipse page lists Canadian Hemlock; Sun Home has stated it offers the Eclipse in both Canadian hemlock and Canadian red cedar, so buyers who want the black exterior with a cedar interior indoors should confirm the wood on their order. The Eclipse shares Sun Home's platform-level Vitatech EMF summary, VERT VOC sample and ATS adhesive report, is ETL Listed through Intertek, and carries the limited lifetime warranty: up to 7 years on cabinetry and heaters, 3 on controls, 90 days of labor and shipping.

Best black barrel (traditional)
For buyers who want the black look on a real Finnish-style barrel, the Almost Heaven Pinnacle 4-Person in its Onyx finish is the strongest package on the record. The Pinnacle itself is well documented: 1⅜ inch ball-and-socket lumber, a Harvia 6 kW heater included, a published bench of 16 by 63¼ inches at 17 inches high, an interior of 75¼ by 63¼ by 69¼ inches, up to four people, built in the USA, shipping in six to eight weeks, with a limited lifetime warranty on manufacturing defects and Harvia's 1-year element and 5-year component terms per Almost Heaven's warranty page. Garage Gym Reviews' hands-on review of the Almost Heaven Morgan barrel, which GGR says may also be marketed as the Pinnacle, reported about 30 minutes to a 190°F maximum and higher readings with water on the stones, and scored the platform 4.2 out of 5; it is cited here as platform-level evidence.
The finish is where the record splits, and this guide prints the split rather than resolving it. Almost Heaven frames its barrels as cedar with a choice of Natural or Onyx finishes; at least one dealer lists the Onyx variant as "Onyx Stained Fir." Because the maker and a dealer describe the lumber differently, confirm in writing which species you are buying before ordering the Onyx finish. Lowest price, with built-in red light
The Burneek Onyxeek 2-Person is the least expensive black cabin verified for this guide, at $4,299 regular list at the September 17 check, and Burneek's homepage listed it as in stock at the September 21 index check. Burneek describes it as 100 percent Canadian hemlock with an all-black finish and an 8 mm tempered glass front door, in the same all-black, full-glass-door format Sun Home's site says it introduced. Its published spec sheet lists 3 quartz heaters Burneek calls full spectrum, 6 carbon far-infrared panels and a tourmaline foot panel, two 660 nm and 850 nm ceiling light panels, a maximum Burneek says is intentionally capped at about 150°F, 2,000 W on a standard 110 to 120 V household circuit, and a 2-year warranty. Quartz emitters do pass the emitter-type test this guide uses for full-spectrum heat; Burneek publishes no spectral output by band, and neither does any other maker here.
The price comes with a short evidence record, printed here in full. Burneek publishes no circuit amperage (2,000 W works out to about 16.7 A at 120 V, an editorial calculation; confirm with Burneek before wiring), no cabin weight, and a "less than 2 mG at seated position" EMF claim with no named laboratory. This guide located no independent editorial review or instrumented test of any Onyxeek. Burneek's returns page allows 30 days from shipment for unused, uninstalled saunas in original packaging, with a 25 percent restocking fee and return freight paid by the customer, and the 2-person page still carries one-person copy in places. U.S. design patent D1,079,961 was filed January 5, 2024 and granted June 17, 2025. The record identifies Fish & Fischer LLC as the assignee and Tyler Fish and Adam Fischer as the inventors. Sun Home identifies this patent with its Luminar design. The patent record should not be used as proof that Sun Home invented every black sauna format or that another product infringes it.

That is Sun Home's account, not an independently verified category-first claim. The market fact that matters to a buyer is simpler: the all-black cabin with a full-glass door is now a format that several brands sell, at prices from about $4,300 to about $14,500 among the models reviewed here, and the differences underneath the finish, in heat, testing, warranty and service, are larger than the differences in the look.
